Exercise Across California

Exercise Across California was launched in 2009 in an effort to motivate children to be active and healthy, improve students' levels of physical fitness, and combat childhood obesity.

The program consists of students putting in extra exercise time that goes above and beyond their physical education requirements. By using pedometers, teachers help students keep track of their progress while they exercise 2,186 miles across California. Along the way teachers and students virtually visit 13 landmarks highlighting California's history, tying in with state standards for social science.

Exercise Across California targets students in third to sixth grades in San Joaquin County. Participating classrooms that complete the entire program receive monetary support to purchase physical education equipment for classroom use. At the end of the program, the top student mile earners from each participating class attend a field trip to San Francisco where they attend a San Francisco Giants game and walk across the Golden Gate Bridge.

Exercise Across California is made possible through a grant provided by Kaiser Permanente, and partnerships with the UC Davis Cooperative Extension, Network for a Healthy California, In-Shape Health Clubs, and Harvest of the Month.
