San Joaquin County Schools

San Joaquin County is located in northern California, 75 miles east of San Francisco, 50 miles south of Sacramento, and 75 miles from the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains. The county population is approximately 726,106 people, with the majority of the county's residents (305,658) residing in Stockton. The cities of Lodi, Manteca, Tracy, Ripon, Escalon, Linden, and Lathrop are also in San Joaquin County.

San Joaquin County is one of the original 27 counties of California and was named by the Spanish explorer Gabriel Moraga in honor of St. Joachim in 1813. Since that time San Joaquin County has become a major agricultural region and transportation center.

San Joaquin County is home to 14 school districts housing 239 public school sites, including charter schools, and nearly 144,000 students. The SJCOE provides a variety of services to support the students and educators of San Joaquin County. Collaborative efforts between the SJCOE and the 14 school districts ensure that students will receive the highest-quality education.

This year, two San Joaquin County schools received the 2016 California Gold Ribbon Schools Award: Ripona Elementary School, Ripon Unified School District; and Brock Elliott Elementary School, Manteca Unified School District. The California Gold Ribbon Schools Award is in place of the California Distinguished Schools Program while new assessments and accountability systems are being developed.

Two Stockton schools were named among the top 25 high schools in California by U.S. News & World Report. Stockton Collegiate International Secondary School, a public charter school authorized by Stockton Unified School District, is ranked No. 2; and Stockton Unified Early College Academy, Stockton Unified School District, is ranked No. 23. Nationally, both schools are among the top 200.
