San Joaquin Building Futures Academy (SJBFA) is a public school for students in San Joaquin County who participate in the SJCOE YouthBuild program. SJBFA is a high school dropout credit recovery program that offers grades 9-12 and serves youth ages 18-24. Academic and construction curriculum is integrated and provides multiple opportunities for hands-on experiences. SJBFA utilizes a nontraditional approach to education and focuses on five key elements:
- • Completion of a high school diploma
- • Certification in a construction-related industry
- • Leadership development and community service
- • On-going case management
- • Post-program placement in post-secondary education, employment, military, or an apprenticeship
SJBFA is in partnership with YouthBuild San Joaquin, a federally-funded construction and employment training program. Students enrolled in YouthBuild have the opportunity to earn money, learn construction skills, and go to high school at the same time. Working in the YouthBuild Program while attending SJBFA allows students to experience on-the-job training and build 21st-century life and career skills.
