GRASP IT:

Getting Results in After-School Programs; Innovatively and Tangibly (GRASP IT) is a consortium within San Joaquin County that offers intensive after-school programs in nine school districts. The program includes four community-based partners with the San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE) serving as the Local Educational Agency (LEA) and provides professional development opportunities, grant writing, program evaluation, and technical assistance.

GRASP IT programs are funded by After School Education & Safety (ASES) state grants, as well as 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) federal grants. The ASES and 21st CCLC programs provide an opportunity to merge school reform strategies with community resources. The goal is to support local efforts to improve assistance to students and broaden the base of support for education in a safe, constructive environment. It is the intent of ASES and 21st CCLC program legislation to encourage schools and school districts to provide safe and educationally enriching alternatives for children and youth during non-school hours. The ASES and 21st CCLC programs involve collaboration among parents; youth; representatives from schools and governmental agencies, such as local law enforcement, local parks, and recreation departments; and individuals from community-based organizations and the private sector. Programs are created through partnerships between schools and local community resources to provide literacy, academic enrichment, and safe, constructive alternatives for students in grades K-9.
