Letter from the Superintendent

Welcome to the San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE). The SJCOE is a service-centered agency that supports school districts, students, educators, families, and the broader community with the overarching goal of ensuring that every student in our county has an opportunity to receive a high-quality education and a chance to tell their story.

We strive to provide opportunities that enrich students' lives and maximize their learning potential, teach students how to be active and engaged citizens of our community, inspire students to be life-long learners - whether in college or other avenues, and prepare students for success in their careers and adult lives.

San Joaquin County is home to approximately 152,000 public-school students. The SJCOE works in collaboration with our county's 14 independent school districts and charter schools as well as public service agencies, businesses, and institutions of higher education to meet the educational needs of our county's children so that they can succeed and prosper.

As one of California's 58 county offices of education, we support our county's school districts by performing tasks that can be done more economically at the county level, from fiscal oversight to facilitating professional development opportunities for educators.

At the SJCOE, we also offer unique programs and services for families and children that support academic achievement and social-emotional wellness from birth through preschool, kindergarten, high school, and beyond. We provide direct services to children and adults with specialized needs through our alternative education court and community schools, charter schools, and special education programs. And we operate innovative programs that support our county’s adult learners through our Teachers College of San Joaquin, Come Back Kids program, Greater Valley Conservation Corps, and Code Stack Academy.

The SJCOE's chief executive officer is the San Joaquin County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Troy A. Brown. An elected position, the County Superintendent is a constitutional officer who also acts as a liaison for local school districts and the state. To learn more about the Superintendent of Schools, please read Dr. Brown’s bio.

We invite you to tour the San Joaquin County Office of Education website to learn more about our innovative programs and services or link with our county's school districts.
