CodeStack Night Academy

Starting Dec. 11, CodeStack will begin accepting applications for new 18-month remote Night Academy program

CodeStack, the San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE) software engineering department, is excited to announce the expansion of its CodeStack Academy software engineering certification program. Starting Dec. 11, CodeStack will begin accepting applications at CodeStackAcademy.org for the new 18-month remote CodeStack Night Academy program.

The new CodeStack Night Academy will cover the same curriculum as the existing 9-month day program but will expand to shorter classes over an 18-month path to certification.

“It has been rewarding to watch our past graduates find living-wage jobs in this industry. But there continues to be a growing need, especially now. Current events have confirmed what we already knew about the industry. One of the effects of COVID has been more and more opportunities for software engineers to work remotely,” said Jateen Bhakta, CodeStack Academy coordinator.  “We decided that offering a remote educational program was the next logical step for us,” he said.

CodeStack Academy was created in 2016 to provide a pathway for San Joaquin County residents to high-paying jobs in the tech industry.  “Our goal with CodeStack Academy has always been to open the doors to opportunities for our county; to bring access to the education to enter this lucrative field; to bring the diversity of our community to the tech industry; to build a workforce that prompts Silicon Valley to look to our valley as a source for their employment recruiting efforts,” said CodeStack Director Johnny Arguelles. “This next step gets us closer to that goal.  There has been a huge demand for night classes from those interested in accessing this opportunity but cannot afford to suspend work to attend our day-time classes. We knew that the best way to share this opportunity was to create a remote educational program that allows students an opportunity to move their career to the next level with the flexibility that fits with their current work and life schedule,“ he said.

The CodeStack night-time students will get the same coaching and immersion into software development that day-time students receive. The classes have been adjusted, making them shorter and adding supplemental video lessons, lab time for team projects, and access to CodeStack STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) learning tools. The department has taken every consideration to assure student success and make sure students graduate job-ready.

CodeStack Night Academy students will graduate with a Software Engineering Certificate from the SJCOE. They will have completed 990 hours of class time working with the most in-demand software development frameworks desired by local tech giants such as Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, and Google. They will complete job readiness training, including resume writing workshops, interview coaching, and portfolio building. The students will also complete a three-month apprenticeship working with the SJCOE software engineering team, working on projects that benefit San Joaquin County communities, schools, and local non-profits.
