Migrant Education Graduates Honored

Graduating seniors and their families gathered at the SJCOE's Wentworth Education Center on May 24 to celebrate the achievements of students across San Joaquin County who participated in the Migrant Education program.

Speakers included McNair High School (Lodi Unified School District) senior Arturo Ambriz, who was named the Migrant Honor Student of the Year.

Also speaking was Guillermo Lopez-Romo, a former Tracy High School (Tracy Unified School District) student in Migrant Education who currently teaches at East Union High School. He spoke to students about the challenges he faced and the importance of family support in continuing education.

Some of the family support in Migrant Education is evident in the members of the Migrant Regional Parent Advisory Committee, who were also at the celebration.

Operated at the SJCOE, Region 23 Migrant Education provides supplemental services that encourage educational opportunities leading to empowerment and success in the lives of migrant students and their families. For many students this means college and scholarships while for others it involves learning English, acquiring a GED, job training, or survival skills. Migrant Education develops supplemental academic and hands-on programs and services to meet the educational needs of migrant students.

More information is available at the SJCOE Migrant Education webpage.
