Students Learn About the Women Who Helped Shape Stockton

A local Stockton author spoke to Venture Academy Family of Schools students about the women who played prominent roles in the developments of the city of Stockton.

Mary Jo Gohlke spoke to students about some of the women in her book during their California Literature class at Delta VISTA of Venture Academy Family of Schools on Nov.12.

“Remarkable Women of Stockton” is a book about the women who helped shape Stockton in its infancy. The book features women such as Dolores Huerta cofounder of the United Farm Workers, and writer Maxine Hong Kingston of whom a school in Stockton Unified School District (SUSD) is named.

The students listened as she shared information about her journey writing the book, from research, to writing, to the process she went through in order to get it published.  She also shared some of her favorites from her book.

The California Literature class is offered to 11th-  to 12th- grade students, and focuses on making interdisciplinary connections to California’s history, cultural fabric, politics, art, music, and development.

Gohlke is a retired librarian who worked at the Cesar Chavez Central Library in Stockton.
