Meet the January COSP Educator of the Month

Frank Griffen teaches at Career Readiness Academy, part of SJCOE County Operated Schools and Programs

Congratulations to Frank Griffen the January Educator of the Month from San Joaquin County Office of Education County Operated Schools and Programs!

Teaching at the SJCOE is Frank’s first teaching experience. He is on his second year in the classroom and states that he is having the time of his life. Frank chose the education field as he remembered so many of his teachers and the lessons and values they taught him.  With this, he strives in earnest to repay their hard work and patience every day.  “I want to teach and be a positive influence on our students and help them move forward in their lives and education,” says Griffen.

Here's what Frank has to say about his experience as a teacher.

What do you love about teaching?

I truly enjoy the company of my students. I can feel them pick up on that, and know they believe I have their best interests at heart.  I love teaching because I love learning.  I learn something new every day and will keep it that way.

What is the best thing that has happened in your classroom the past month?

My family and I really love Christmas and decorating for the holidays.  Having a tree in the classroom and making ornaments was a great way to extend that happiness.

Who was your favorite teacher as a child? Why?

My second-grade teacher Miss Burrows.  The day John F. Kennedy was assassinated she had me run down to the Audio-Visual Room and grab a TV.  She talked, shared, and cried the rest of the day.  She said, “Pay attention, you are all a little older now, and you need to hear and understand what just happened.” When I got home I asked my mom why she wasn’t watching the news and was acting like nothing special had happened today.  I let her know that I was old enough to understand and we could talk about it if she wanted - and we did.  I keep that day and that lesson in mind with curriculum and conversations relevant to what is going on in our students’ lives.
